I have no clue, how or when I stumbled upon Addergebroed, but everytime I hear his tunes I thank the heavens! Addergebroed is a Dutch producer whose real name, Joep, is just as difficult to pronounce as his artist name. Anyhow, Addergebroed caught my attention with his unique style and funky sounds, which is hard to come by these days. As soon as I heard his tunes I had tons of questions, as I’m sure you all do too. Hopefully the interview below makes you smile as much as I did, it’s clear Joep has a deep passion for his music, and nothing makes me happier.
Check out these tunes while you give the interview a read!

Q: Where does the name “Addergebroed” come from?
Well…That is a good question! When I was 16 years old I thought of that name and just stuck to it. It is an old Dutch curseword. It means something like ‘bastard’. The best translation would be viper-spawn or viper-breed. I have also set up a contest for those who are willing to make a crazy video, pronouncing my name.
Q: What made you start producing? Why Dubstep?
My sister was listening to dubstep way before I did and to be honest, I didn’t like it at first. After a while tho, I started to like the sounds of Skream, Caspa and Rusko. I went to a few big dubstep parties in Paradiso, Amsterdam. Back then the line-up would contain names like: Emalkay, L-Wizz, Caspa, Rusko and The Others.
In 2008 I fell in love with the Excision Shambhala mix. This mix contained so much new sounds and revolutionary tunes that I got really interested in producing this genre. After hearing the mix I started playing around in GarageBand, I had been playing guitar for over 10 years back then and I used to record some of my own tunes on guitar in GB already.
After a while I started to get better at making tunes in GarageBand. ‘Zodiac’ was the last tune that I have produced in GB before I switched to Logic Studio. I don’t think that I started producing dubstep because I wanted to produce dubstep specifically. I think it had more to do with the fact that I wanted to do more with music then just play the guitar and broadening my musical horizon.
Q: What was your first release you were proud of and why?
The first release ever was on Dubline Audio, the release was a compilation EP and it contained two of my very early tunes called ‘Ghosts’ and ‘Out Of Control’. This release gave me some first exposure into the dubstep world.
The first solo release I am realy proud of was the ‘Zodiac EP’ released on Tsunami Audio. The biggest point in my musical carreer yet is that Excision played my tune ‘Zodiac’ in his Shambhala 2011 mix. This felt like a dream coming true, being in the mix that I fell in love with in 2008.
Q: Who were some of the main inspirational artists for you?
My main inspirational artists in the dubstep genre were: Rusko, Culprate, Gravity, Datsik, Skream, Numbernin6, Stenchman, The Others, Koan Sound.
Right now my musical influences in dubstep would be: Koan Sound, Habstrakt, Culprate, Teknian, MSD, Requake, Xkore, Sub-Antix.
Outside of the dubstep genre my inspiration comes from (and these names might sound strange ;D ): Avenged Sevenfold, Rammstein, Tom Waits, Headhunterz, Ash, Soilwork, Telepopmusik, Noisia.
Q: What are you plans for the future, and what can we look forward to as listeners?
My plans for the future as a producer are to make more different styles of music. As I notice that I find more and more enjoyment in making different things then dubstep. And if I am completely honest, I am starting to get more into the deep, melodic sounds of dubstep, rather then the rough, hyperactive, high pitched sounds that I have also been producing so far. Now don’t get me wrong, there will still be jumpy, hyperactive, Addergebroed tunes, they will probably just get a bit more musically evolved.
One more thing you can look forward to as a listener is a full length album I am currently working on, this will contain lots of deeper, more IDM-ish (Intelligent dance music) vibes then usual. I don’t know yet when I will finish it, and what the further plans would be for that but I will keep everyone informed on that.
Q: What other genres of music do you listen to?
I listen to: 100Bpm, Hard-rock, Metal, Jazz, Electro, Minimal-techno, Techno, Hardstyle, Lounge and IDM.
Everything that contains a good powerfull melody that I can relate to in some way basically.
Q: Anything else you want fans to know?
Yes! I would like everyone to know that I feel gobsmacked by the way things have gone for me. I still can’t believe that there are so many people around the world, playing my music, on their mp3-players or in clubs. Music means so much to me, and it is still always incredible to see that people like the tunes I make. I also want to thank a lot of people that believed in my music from the beginning, ‘Devnik’, DarkstepWarrior, 1Point5, Datsik, MrDubAndBass, Gravity, Dubline Audio, Tsunami Audio, Stenchman and everyone that is in my personal life. The last thing I would like the fans to know is who to keep an eye out for: Devnik, Habstrakt, Point Blank, MSD, SFR, AFK, Dirt Monkey, KSH, Rekoil, Bloodfire and Lifecycle.
